Volunteer for Donut Day – June 1, 2024

It’s that time again to make the donuts! Every year OPALGA+ takes a Saturday in June Pride month to volunteer with Pilgrim Church (460 Lake St., Oak Park) to make and sell donuts at the Oak Park Farmer’s market. We work hard, but we have a lot of fun, too. It’s a great fundraiser for our organization. It’s also a great way for our organization to be visible and participate in our Oak Park community.

Won’t you join us on Saturday, June 1st? To sign up, select a role and a time slot, then click submit.  Shifts end at the indicated times.  No one should expect to leave before the end of the shift. If specific duties are no longer needed, such as mixing is completed early, volunteers should expect to be reassigned to other tasks.

Volunteer for the 2024 Scholarship Gala

We are actively planning our 2024 Scholarship Gala! Come in person or Zoom in to our next Gala Planning meeting on Monday, May 13th at 7pm. We need volunteers to help with:

  1. Interviewing DJ, photographers, entertainers, and emcees — or volunteering your own talents to add programming to the gala entertainment and events.
  2. Promoting event attendance in September / early October.
  3. Following up with Business Sponsors to collect money, in-kind donations and their ad graphics for the program book.
  4. Programming the Gala including entertainment blocking and writing the script for the Emcee and others as needed to maintain flow.
  5. Organizing and editing the video programming to be shared at the Gala and on the website.
  6. Day-Of Volunteers to check people in, sell raffle tickets, promote the live auction items, handle coat check, etc.

Of course, if you have other ideas for how you’d like to volunteer / support the Gala Committee please feel free to email gala@opalga.org.

Volunteer with the Townships August 2024

OPALGA+ joined the Oak Park Township and the River Forest Township in supporting their youth back-pack program in 2023 and we plan to repeat this activity in 2024. Our volunteers assembled packages of school supplies (pens, pencils, notebooks, crayons, scissors, etc.) and put them in the backpacks. We then volunteer a second day to distribute the backpacks for free to the area’s school kids. We work hard, but we have a lot of fun, too. It’s also a great way for our organization to be visible and participate in our Oak Park community.

Volunteer at the Chicago Food Depository

OPALGA+ volunteers with Greater Chicago Food Depository several times a year to help re-pack bulk food into individual family servings. In 2023, we had two group events – one in May 2023 and the other in September. In 2024, we’ve volunteered in January and April and are planning another volunteer opportunity in the fall. These events are at the Chicago Food Depository headquarters at 4100 West Ann Lurie Place, Chicago IL and we usually car-pool to get there.

Interested in joining us? Advanced online registration required. They have space for 25 volunteers ages 11 and older for our group.  Wear jeans/pants (no shorts) and enclosed shoes (no sandals). Free parking available at the Depository.
