Oak Park Area Lesbian and Gay Association: OPAL Gala

The Oak Park Area Lesbian and Gay Association (OPALGA), in addition to fostering a community wide understanding of issues facing lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered (LGBT) people through cultural, social and outreach events, supports a network of programs for LGBT youth and young adults. Designed and overseen by a professional director, all programs are offered free, confidential, and provide a safe place for participants to discuss issues they otherwise might not feel comfortable sharing in what we consider traditional support systems.

The proceeds from OPALGA’s annual recognition and fundraising banquet provide approximately 50% of the youth network’s operating budget. The remaining funding needs are raised through grants and private contributions.

OPALGA serves close to 1,500 youth and young adults per year. Our service area is drawn from over 35 suburban communities reaching beyond the Oak Park area into Chicago and suburban Cook and DuPage counties.

OPALGA strives to foster a community wide understanding of the issues that gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered people face through direct outreach and interaction with local community organizations.
